powersteering and hydroboost

Last year I installed a psc powersteering pump and remote resevoir along with a hydroboost set-up off a mid 90's chev diesel truck. I am running a Scout II powersteering box and this is all in a '69 Scout 800 with a 304. The pump has always made a little noise but gradually its been getting worse. Last time out it got very bad and real noisy, still steers and brakes fine but very noisy. I am running 37x14x15 inch swampers with d44's out of a Scout II. I noticed it was leaking from the inlet into the pump from the remote resevoir, cracked around the fitting thats welded onto the thin metal cover on pump. (thin metal cover was cracked). I think the metal cover is a little thin to have such a large fitting on it.

Anyway, why would the pump only last 6 months and its not like I have alot of run time on it. I bought the pump kit from IHOnly. It has no problem turning the tires and the brakes are great, no issues at all. When I installed the pulley, I used the special pulley tools and did bleed everything out, no issues. I installed the stock pump from a sii and it works alright but has problems turning the tires at a stand still in my driveway. The psc pump has no issues turning the tires at all, even when wheeling.

Would heat be an issue? I don't have a cooler on it. Most of the run time has been around -20 degrees c anyway. I have to figure this out, not wanting to go through pumps every 6 months... I have both return lines going into a t and then to the resevoir if that matters. Can't think of anything else, except the oil does get quite hot. The resevoir is hot to touch after driving for a while. The stock pump does whine driving down the road also.

Thanks, hopefully I can get this sorted...

I'm going to move this thread to "product questions" so that Jeff can directly address this as a product issue. But...did you obtain this part from IH Parts America, or IH only, which is a different company?

I did purchase from IH Parts America and not sure if there was confusion when I purchased it but I did read on the psc website that the 1400 series pump needs a cooler. I guess its an expensive lesson learned... Now I am going to buy a new pump and a cooler/fan/thermostat and possibly a temp guage to monitor it for a while... It really does improve the steering power, like I said the stock pump wont turn the tires lock to lock in the driveway.

I thought I posted a reply but I guess it didn't get through. Anyway, I was on the psc website and it says you must use a cooler with the pump I was running with the powersteering and a hydroboost setup. I guess I answered my own questions. I would suggest an even larger pump and use a cooler with a fan if you plan on running 37inch rubber. The one IHOnly north sells as a kit with the remote resevoir does work well on my set-up but I think a little more pressure or volume would benefit 37inch rubber. The kit has no problems turning tires at a stand still and out wheeling I never had any problems but it did start to whine when pushed a little. Mabye a cooler is all it needs???

Also my rims are 15x10 with a 3.5 inch offset. That makes the scrub radius farther out which is harder to turn too which would put more strain on the pump... 14 inch wide rubber takes a little power to turn.

It looks like the pump is only a 1300 series pump after finding my bill of sale, and after talking to psc they said I would need hyd. Assist when running the 37 inch rubber and hydroboost, also a cooler is a must.
