Power Steering Question

Hi again,
okay here is what is going on. I took off my power steering belt on my 73 Scout II with 345 and get a new one. When I went to put it on the one the parts store gave me was to short so I just but back on the old one for now. Started up the Scout and now I cant steer. If I move the wheel right or left the belt squweaks. Do I just have air in the system? I tried to turn the pulley counterclockwise to get any air out, but will the same thing. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks again.

Jason; it sounds like your belt is just not tight enough. If you did not open the fluid circuit and introduce air into the system you should be fine.
I would take the old belt off and take it to the parts store, they can measure it for a match. Your old belt May be more worn than you think.

Ron is correct, I never have a parts house do a belt lookup, ya always take a functional belt in and have it matched for width and length.

Typically on these rigs, they originally had an a.I.r. Pump driven by the ps belt in tandem. Then the a.I.r. Pump was tossed and a different belt installed (shorter), I do this all the time! Therefore, the parts look up is correct only for the oem system, not the modded version.

Correct belt "tension" for that drive system is in the neighborhood of 130lbs. "tension" (measured with a belt tension gauge) for a new belt. That is dam tight, when the belt is tightened properly your problem will disappear! Air can't enter the hydraulic system unless the pump ran dry or the plumbing was opened, changing belts does nothing to affect that.

Hey thanks.
One more thing. I should have said is, I can't steer at all. Is this still the case with my belt to loss?

Yes!

With no pump operation, no power assist.

Actually you can steer, it's just real difficult to turn the wheel without the power assist. Any power steering system will allow steering control if any of the hydraulics fail or it tosses a belt, it just takes alotta muscle and thinking about where you are pointing the ride!
