Power Steering Conversion

Attempting to convert my '73 1110 pickup to power steering. Do I need to find or fabricate some sort of strengthening plate to mount inside the frame where the steering box bolts to the frame? Not sure there is one now or if it is needed? If I do, are these sold, and how important would it be that one is installed.

Also, I used stainless 1/2" bolts to mount the bracket to the frame because I had them lying around. Is this a bad idea and I should just use grade 5 instead?

It is very important that the mounting area is made as strong as possible , if the backing plate is not installed it will only be a matter of time/useage before cracks will develop.
There is a tremendous amount of force transferred to the mounting bolts on steering boxes ,especially with oversized tires and offroad use.

Nix the stainless bolts , personally I would use grade 8 fine thread fasteners with flanged heads on both bolts and nuts

Yes, fab a plate or take a cardboard template to a welding shop. I would go with 3/16" to 1/4". I usually buy grade 8 for almost everything since there is no guarantee that the bolts in the hardware store are really the grade they're marked given the lowest-bidder global sourcing these days. Washers or flange bolts and stover nuts is the way to go.
