I have a 3 year old pertronix in my 345 and I have misplaced the plastic feeler gauge? I wanted to recheck my gap, can I use a metal feeler gauge?

Yes but it must be non magnetic such as brass or high grade stainless really high grade no steel you can get the brass set at sears for about 4 bucks well that eas 20 yrs ago !

Anything will work so long as it is non magnetic and the correct thickness +/- .001. If you have the thickness measurement you need and a micrometer you can search around your home for a piece of plastic/metal/hard thick paper that meets the thickness and use it instead of buying something.
Eg if you need .009" 3 layers of notebook paper will work great.

Why does it have to be non-magnetic. Will it screw something up if you use a plain steel gauge?

Update:just finished getting some info from a pertronix dealer. They said that any feeler gauge will work, it does not need to be non magnetic. They also told me that a credit card is the correct thickness to set the gap which is .030 and sure enough a credit card is .030.

The reason for non-magnetic I believe is so what you feel with the feeler gauge is the gap and not the magnet grabbing it. Using a feeler gauge; there is a touch too light and a touch too firm, the real gap is somewhere in the middle.

Thanks for the credit card tip, I'll chalk that up there with a matchbook cover and ear wax.
