Tearing down a 345e made in 71(no idea what it came out of) anyway- the pistons have a number 2 on them next to the pin hole, any significance? Need pics?
 
A picture would not hurt. I have to assume you are talking about a number on the piston itself and not on the rod otherwise.

If the number is raised like it was cast in and in the piston pin recess area it is a die number designation. The manufacturer has multiple cavities to cast the slugs from which to finish machine the pistons out of so the number adds traceability.
 
Yes it's cast in the piston - heres a shot of the cast and the numbers stamped on the top. Thanks again

Yep...the stamped number on the crown is the IH part number. The "cast-in" number on the pin boss is the mold trace as Robert alluded to.
