Heavier is not necessarily better, it really depends on the driving conditions and the average ambient temperature you are in. Since I do not know the area you are in, you can use a rule of thumb like this: if you have severe winters with temperatures below freezing, I would not recommend a heavier weight oil, like 20w50, moderate temperatures year round, including summer temps slightly over 100 you can use 15w40, I also usually go with 15w40 as the first choice as a year-round weight oil.
Now, the condition of the engine poses another question, but none of which would change the weight recommendation. If you have a high-mileage engine which is using a lot of oil (not leaks), there is a posibility that you might have (a) stuck ring(s). The 306 is a heavily additized oil with an extremely high detergency, it will go to work on sludge and varnish in the engine. When this happens, an increase in oil consumption might be noticed, so you will have to pay close attention to that. If the oil consumption goes up, that is the reason why. Normally with stuck rings, once they have freed up, the consumption will go down to where it was before, or even lower. I would not go any longer than 2,000 miles on the first oil change if you noticed the oil consumption increasing..... Then on the subsequent change, keep an eye on it and adjust the time frame accordingly..... If everything goes well, you might be able to get up to around a 5,000 mile drain interval. Make sure that you change the oil filter every time you change the oil.
Hope that helps!
