Oil pump, when to rebuild.

Just getting things put back together and was wondering (since I would rather not spend the $) when do I need to rebuild? When not?

I know, I know....might as well rebuild it, but do I need to? The only issue I have seen is the shaft from distributor seems to be a little loose. Does the rebuild kit come with a sleeve? From what I can see there is no sleeve. Also what gasket to use on a 304 1200b 67' pickup. Paper thin or other.

Clearances on gear to side are in tolerance.

If you are in clearance spec it's fine. Only problem you'll find it the gasket... Without buying the rebuild kit or finding someone who has one to give you, you're going to have to buy the rebuild kit...
There May be other options but I am not aware of them.. The gasket only creates the end clearance which is .002-.003. If you have that clearance with the cover on , no gasket , some moto seal (gray sealant by permatex) and torque to spec will do fine.

It looks like the felpro gasket set I got for the engine has two types of gaskets. One of which is paper thin, so that should work for the .002-.003 clearance.

Well the damn gasket didn't fit quite right and when all torqued down, I could not spin the pump. :mad5: guess a proper gasket and rebuild kit is in order.

Rebuild kit is in the mail! Quick question. How do I get the gear with the shaft to the distributor out? The shaft is wider at the top and cannot just pull through. Just cut it?

I picture is worth a thousand words....

When rebuilding, do I just cut the old shaft in order to get the old gears out? The new shaft does not have this little extension.

That little extension is a thick wall tubing piece that has a crimp in it to retain it to the shaft. You press it off the shaft if you have a press, or put it in a vise and drive out the shaft. Instructions in the service manual show pics of how this all goes together.

I never destroy old parts, especially increasingly rare oil pump parts - unless they are already destroyed or must be destroyed. In my recent rebuild I did just what you are now doing. I pressed off that sleeve and in the end re-used the old gears - still serviceable - because I got minor clicking with the new gears and saved those for a later time when I had the patience to deal with filing off the nicks, burrs or whatever.

Just a thought.
