Here is some interesting reading that is pertinent to our current weather pattern . This is something they never mention in school, including college for geology. Insurance companies probably frown on it. All you have to do is sink some core holes next to major rivers to realize these happen more often than big quakes in California.

Always amazing what natural variations in the weather can do, mixed with topography or other factors.
 
Oregon had a similar occurrence in 1996. There was a heavy winter rain fall followed by a heavy snow in the mountains. Then warm rain by way of a jet stream in February. Our driveway ends right across from the santiam river. The books and valuables went to the 2nd floor and we had the papers and essentials packed ready to go. We never flooded, but I had to drive miles out of the way through another town for unflooded road to get to work. I had friends who flooded up the mountain side so to speak as babbling brooks became raging rivers. It was a mess, but I hear tell it wasn't near as bad as the 65 flood here before the dams. The swale between me and the neighbor behind me was full. He couldn't get out for days. We still bring it up time to time.
