I have a 1968 Scout and I am not sure what size motor is in it according to the line ticket it came with a 266 v8 when I bought it the ad said it was a 304 v8 is there any way I could tell. Are there numbers on the block or what does anyone know

Yes, there is a stamped pad. I marked the location in the attached pic.

The only way to tell is to take a look at that pad and see what is stamped on it. The 266 and 304 externally are dimensionally the same, and parts could be swapped between the two, so any part numbers you find are not unique to either displacement engine. Heck the majority of the parts can be swapped onto a 345 or a 392. The other option would be to tear it down and measure.

That pad is hard to see and can be a pita to look at it, but it is way worth the effort. You maybe able to pull off the front tire and go in through the fender well to have better access to it. Take a light, wire brush, some brake cleaner and a rag. Give it a good scrub and see what you find.

I know the air smog tubes make me wounder. I want to get parts to start working on the motor but was unsure what size motor I had. I did notice that most engine parts would fit the 266 and 304 when I looked for them. With the alt, air tubes , and the exhaust manifold its hard to see but I will spend some time and check it out thanks you all for the info and if anyone else has some insight on this I would be glad to here for you.

That vehicle is significantly altered from being a "stock" unit!

The engine identification pad will be present. You simply have to look for it using a small mirror and a flashlight. Many times the actual stampings are hidden under some paint and alotta oil and crap. You will have to clean it off with solvent to read.

Get down underneath on the passenger side and look straight up at the corner of the block, you will see a segment on the front corner of the block that May even have a fairly large hole drilled into it from the bottom. The numbers are stamped on the side of that pad.

Ya things were a mess when I got the truck. Its no where close to being stock and never will be because thats not what I am building the truck to do. But it is a southern truck in great shape with a workable platform. Plan on making sick 4x4 that can go and do anything I put in its way. The project has just began. Just trying to find out what I have so that I can get parts and start having fun rebuilding and 4x4. Thank you all for the input I will try to find those #s this weekend

The number is only a sequnce number. Like number 123 came before 124 . If you get your LST it will have that number on it.

On the line set ticket and basically what number motor I have in the sequence of motors built

I have a 392 that has the engine serial number on the front left but no id on the right front pad? Never overhauled. Must be a Friday afternoon engine!
