Not just a Carburetor issue?

1969 800A, 304, BWT39, Autolite 2150 Carburetor, auto choke. (I know what your thinking, purchased this way). I have basically rebuilt the top end of the 304. Gaskets, inspection. Timing is 10-12 bftdc. The carb is rebuilt and adjusted pretty good, with the exception of the idle circuit a little high. I have had experience in the past with these carbs and they are normally pretty reliable. The Scout runs good, idles rough at first and a little high. I have not changed the jets out. The issue I’m having is, I have a strong gas smell in the exhaust. As mentioned, I have adjusted the carb several times and it’s as good as it’s going to get. Could this be intake valves leaking by or is it the carb is just not sized right and has to go. Any help is much appreciated.

1. Photos of your engine, carb, distributor, carb linkages, etc. are always useful to us.
2. Strong gas smell = running rich. Is the choke opening fully when the engine gets warmed up? This should take five minutes or less.
3. Idle is high - Can you adjust it down with the curb idle screw?
4. Auto choke - which choke do you have? There are a few different 'auto chokes' out there....photo would be nice.
