Non-Stock Starters

Anyone ever use the "high torque" starters from IHPA?

Just looking for input on a starter other than the start ones. I've been through 2 in the last year and the last one was installed and ran for a month before it failed.

Looking for something other than pos ac delco osky from napa/oreilly/autozone.

Thanks guys.

The a/c delco units are really reliable starters if they are rebuilt correctly. I'm sure the ones from IHPA are good.

Thanks chappie!

Yeah, I figured as much too, but with the last one lasting only a month of working on it and exactly 0.00 road miles, I'm a little nervous. Maybe just a bad reman, but I'd like to increase reliability.

The website pics from IHPA are exactly the reman unit I have and I'd guess Jeff's buying from the same source. Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps Jeff'll chime in.:wink5:

I'd pay more for a good one. If someone can tell me the hi torque ones are worth 3x the price, I'm down. ...anyone?

Thanks,
drew

Yes we buy our starters locally so probably no different than what you have. Except we haven't had any issues or problems with any of them that we have sold(or at least that we are aware of). Are you certain that your wiring is ok?? Otherwise the mini hi-torque starters are worth the money. After many years of use cranking my Scout while in gear when it either died or rock crawling it is finally starting to sound a little crunchy but has never let me down.

Hey Jeff,
thanks for the info. I jumped the gun and went and bought an autozone duralast. Works perfect! I'm pretty sure the wiring is correct as I'm up and running now. One of these days I'll swing by the shop!

Next time around I'll definitely give the high torque one a try.(didn't have the 3 bills this time around)

it's good to hear that even when crawling it there aren't any issues.

Cheers,

It engaged correctly, but drew a ton of current and couldn't barely turn the motor. It pulled the battery down to about 6v across the terminals.

At autozone, the starter kept blowing the current protection switch on the starter tester.

That's a crazy amount of current!

I see. Sometimes there are other problems, like bad ring gears, hence the question. Quality is hit or miss with cheaper brands, but it's still unusual to get 2 bad ones in a row. You still might want to look into adding a relay if you haven't already.
