Newbie that needs direction!

I have an extremely noob set of questions. I do not own a Scout, although, that is my goal. I live in oklahoma, which is not the mecca of Scout ownership or shops. I rarely see one here, and I do not know of any shops here that work on them or at least dedicated to them. My questions are simply around the difference, what to look out for, what not to buy, etc. I see the Scout II is bigger than the 80 or the 800 and the Scout II seems more common I assume it was produced longer. You know just a general overall broad stroke of education about this great vehicle. Anyway, I have enjoyed researching on your forum and if you can direct me to a place where I can get information so that I make a informed purchase I would appreciate it. I hope I posted this in the right place, if not, I apologize.

Welcome to the krew here Mark! And...I do know of some IH-related activity in okleehominy, but a bunch more in tejas and kansas!

Where ya located??...since I'm from grapevine, tejas, I consider okeeland just a northern colony where some folks still don't wear shoes and a dam '62 Scout 80 izza new car used only ta cross tha river once a year in October!

But you have opened now a big ol' basket of IH snakes, everyone has the right opinion about this subject!

My suggestion for Scout research...look for a copy of a fairly new publication on amazon or where ya buy books entitled:

"International Scout gold portfolio, 1961-1980"
brooklands books (british publisher)
isbn 1 85520 3057

I've bought three copies locally at barnes and noble off the rack.

This is a compilation of every "road test" that was published regarding the Scout 80, Scout 800, and Scout II rigs in all of the enthusiast magazines back in the day. Typically a whole lot of marketing smokeblow as most magazine stuff was back then, but it is a major primer on all "Scout" platforms contained in one publication. I still use it for reference quite often!

That's all I'll say about this deal until ya figgr out what ya wanna drag home for a toy based upon what floats yore boat...it's kinda like pickin' a dawg at the pound...you will know when it's tha right dawg! And dawgs pick folks, folks don't pick dawgs!!!!

I will second what Mike has to say with one addition. I think the reason the Scout II is more popular is the availability of aftermarket parts coupled with the creature comforts like disk brakes, power steering and brakes. None of which was available in the Scout. The Scout II is a much more user friendly version.

I appreciate the information, as I said, I hope to be a Scout owner soon...who knows how soon that will be.

Because this would be a "weekend" cruiser type car that my wife and myself would drive, I think I would probably need to go with the Scout II. Or, at least that is the way I am leaning. I almost prefer the original Scout, but with my wife also wanting to drive, I think I need the "creature comforts". Is their any particular years to shy away from?
 
Exactly my point, you will find most say the same thing. " I prefer the Scout but the family/wife/kids need to drive it so I went with the Scout II". I fall into this myself, not so much with someone else driving it but with being able to build a great all around Scout without huge amount of custom fab work. You will find that there is quite a lot of "bolt on" product for the Scout II and very little especially in the "performance" area for the Scout.

that is the way to start the IH infestation. Start with a sii and before you know it you will have a baby Scout. :icon_eek:

I'll bet you didn't know scouts can reproduce. :gringrin:

I have had 2 baby scouts a 61' and a 65' that I still have.

Beautiful...I love it. Like I said, I love the "baby" Scout as you say slightly more than sii. Very nice Scout!!
