I just wanted to say hi. I am new to this fourm and just got a Scout 800. I have owned and worked on classic broncos for the last 16 years, please don't hold that against me, but I sold my last one about 6 months ago. Like I said I just got a Scout 800 I just couldn't pass up the price... Free. All I really know about it so far is that it has a v-8, I believe a 304 but I haven't checked, holly carb, and I'm pretty sure it has a 4 speed. It does need alot of work like new wiring harness, brakes, tires, replace all the fluids, tune up, and alot more that I probably don't even know of. I was told that it was running two years ago then one of the pos started to monkey with the wiring. The body is pretty rust free and staight with the eception of a little rust on the upper front fenders and a small dent on the rear fender well on the drivers side. Any way since this the spot for tech questions is it possible to upgrade the front brakes to disk, I'm not sure if it has the Dana 27 or 30, I have only really looked at it for about 15 minutes. Any way just wanted to say hi and I know if I can't find my questions by searching I will be asking alot of questions.

Welcome to the krew here milo! And no sweat regarding the Bronco deal...I'd be playing with those too if I could afford 'em! And they got much in common with all this IH stuff! Rust, crappy electrics (not near as bad as IH stuff though!), same old axle stuff, etc.

Spend some time cruzzin' through all the posts in the sub-forums and you'll be indoctrinated real quick.

Most important is to positively I.d. What your rig incorporates in the way of components, not what "the factory" might have put out, and not what anyone else might have. We can identify anything for ya that you May be unsure about, but we need nice, well-framed and focused pics of "stuff"!! Then we can pick ya apart (inna good way though!).

The line set ticket is a nice little historical touch if you like that sort of stuff, but after 40+ years there is no telling what ya have now, that is all that matters.

We have many members here playing with s80 and s800 rigs in various permutations, we don't break the forums out by product line since so much of what went into the ihc lineup is common across many platforms. Even an s800 shop reference will have many pics and illustrations/references to loadstar (hd trucks) and medium duty vehicles so don't be put off by that. Ihc did not do things like chryfordrolet!

Get busy now and post some pics, show us yore stuff! Best place to start is in the reader's rides sub-forum, that way we have all your stuff in one place. Then when ya need help with a particular issue (or issues), start a new thread or add onto an existing thread as needed.

And...regarding the disk brake deal...around here....anything is possible if ya got enuff dinero and skills!

Glad to have ya onboard!

Thanks for the welcome michael. I am actually in santa cruz for the weekend so I won't be able to take pics until Monday or Tuesday. I will definately be taking alot of pics. The first thing I am doing is getting rid of the tinker bell floor mats :rolleyes5:

Welcome to the forum milo. If you're going to play with scouts you're in the right place. I've worked with many of the folks here and you'll find no better support for getting your rig up to specs.

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome lou. I've been seaching for the last three days for things that I can do with my Scout. It seems that there are alot of options for lifts ect. I can't wait to get started.

I just posted some pics in the reader's rides section to show what I am starting out with. I looked at it some more it does have a 4 speed there is no knob but it looks like it 1st is up and to the left and reverse is up and to the left. I know it's not much to go on but any idea of what transmition it might have? Also the rear axel looks centered and the front is offset to the passangers side. I couldn't see what the transfer case was, the Scout is sitting in a bunch of stinging nettles and I didn't want to be itching all night. But if I can recall 4 low was all the way up then nutral was the next down then 2 hi and at the bottom was 4 hi. The shift pattern is like the Bronco Dana 20 with a t shiter but I am not sure if the Dana 18 is the same. Any way let me know what you think

I'm by no means the village idiot/expert regarding the s800 platform, but here is what I can glean from your pics and what I know from working with these rigs at this point:

1) that grille I've never seen before, it May be a part of one of the "package" vehicles that were produced as "theme" rigs by contractors outside of the production facility. Ihc had many variations of those in limited quantities throughout the production run of the s800. It appears to be plastic???

2) if it's a four speed, then it would be a warner t-18 (non-synchro 1st gear), but May have been swapped over time, like anything else on the rig. Ya won't know for sure until ya get it to a place where ya can crawl all over it and find some numbers!

3) if (and that is a big "if"!) it's a 304 and the original engine, then it would be a 1969 or later.

4) the transfer case you describe would be a Dana 20 "single stick" and since the floor/hump is not butchered, that would be oem.

5) the rear axle would be a Dana 44 with a "centered" pumpkin. That goes with the d20 transfer case. I see from the pics that your rear axle is a "tapered hub" version, the last of the Scout 800 production did use a "flanged" axle shaft d44.

6) the seat I can see barely indicates it's from who knows what! And it appears to have the "dealer-installed" roll bar. Is that a "regency" cb hanging under the dash? If so, that's a classic in it's own right and should be preserved!!!! And hopefully the instrument panel/cluster is somewhere stashed in the rig!

The front axle I'll reserve judgment on until ya post pics.

Otherwise appears to be fairly unmolested which is a real plus!!! If it was a "package" rig originally, then you'll find other clues as ya get it cleaned out and locate additional clues. Seems back when those were "new", there was a "lone star" edition in the mix??? I don't have definitive info regarding all the s800 package rigs, but some folks here do have that so I'm sure they will chime in.

One thing for sure, it's much nicer than what I started out with (s80)! Once ya get it where it's accessible, post a bunch more pics! This is fun!

Thanks for the info michael. Here is what I know so far.

1) it is a custom steal grill with a star in it I'm not sure what the kids in CA call it but I see them all the time people have stickers on the windows of their cars and I have seen people with tattoos of them.

2) I will have to check when I get a chance. What is non-sychro? I am assuming that I have to be at a complete stop to put it in first gear.

3) I am hoping that it is a '69, I was told it was but I am still not sure.

4) that is cool that it is a Dana 20. I built twin sticks for my Dana 20 j shift on one of my old broncos and have information on how to do it for the strait shift.

5) how hard is it to find the later housing for the flanged Dana 44 I am assuming that it is stronger then the flanged version.

6) the seats I have no idea. They look like they come from an import of some kind. They are in good shape just need to be cleaned. There is a back seat but right now it is just the frame and a couple of plywood boards that need to be recovered. I didn't notice the cb I am going back this weekend I will have to check. As for the instrument pannel it is on the passanger's side floor on top of the tinker bell floor mat.

Thanks again I'll post more pics of the engine ect this weekend.

You are correctamundo regarding the "synchro" deal on the tranny, not a big deal at all, very common back in the day. Here's a link to basically the same tranny I'm doing now, but this one is a four cylinder app with the "pancake" bellhousing. A twin stick d20 is attached, but it's not a true "twin stick" like performing the interlock modification you are familiar with:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/transmission-tech/911-Scout-80-t18-four-speed-swaperoo.html

Those tapered hub axles (19 spline at the carrier end) work just fine for any application unless yore gonna build serious trail rig. Then the ez route is swap inna Scout II axle built any way ya want and have dinero for!

Here's a thread regarding your axle, while Robert's unit (and mine are both d44 option axles under a Scout 80, they are identical except for pumpkin location. For the s80, the diff is offset to the passenger side due to the output location of the oem d18 transfer case:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/axle-tech-questions/849-ra23-Dana-44-bearings.html

There is "some" interchangeability of individual components between the tapered hub d44 and the later flanged axle d44 units, but due to the complete difference in the actual axle bearing system design, the individual components can't be swapped around unless the axle housing ends are changed out also, and that's just not cost effective at all.

Post up with more detail when ya git it!
