New, need some help with my setup.

First off, being brand new to this forum, I would like to say thank you guys for the knowledge that I have already acquired from here. Saved my butt a couple times already. :)

right to it...I have a 1965 Scout 80 that I would like to set up for mostly off road use/occasional drive to work. It is completely stock at the moment but I have some parts to pick up soon that will hopefully get the ball rolling for me. I have a friend that has been into jeeps his whole life and has some drivetrain parts for me. Here is the setup:

t90 trans with output for pto.
D20 transfer case
overdrive unit, (not sure of brand yet)
pto winch, (also not sure of brand)
transmission has adapter and long output shaft for a sbc.

I haven't seen the parts yet but I get them for $500. He is a long time friend that moved a couple years ago so he is trustworthy.

I have a sbc block and most of an engine that was going to go into an el camino years ago, (father son project that never got off the ground). My goal is to run the 350 with the above setup and clear 33" tires. I am currently running a d27 front and a d44 rear. I have read that the 27 is pretty weak. Should the front axle be a priority? I have a j&&p buddy that is running the d27 and a 350 w/o problems. The 350 will be putting out around 175hp. Trying to keep it pretty mellow. Seems next to impossible to find a lift that will clear 33"s for the 80/800's. SOA is an option that I am considering. My version of offroading would not involve rockcrawling but I live in idaho so I have access to some fun terrain. What do you guys think of this? I have also heard that the tranny is a little weak for a sbc, but I have also heard of people running them for years without problems. Not sure, please help.

Firstly welcome! The t-90 and d-27 will almost certainly explode. Jeeps can sometimes get away with them because they are so much lighter than a Scout. I would avoid them if at all possible. There is nothing aftermarket made for the Scout 80/800's for lift. To clear 33's I would recommend a spring over and swapping in a 44 front. Do it right the first time and you will be much happier in the long run.

Thanks to those who have responded. Much appreciated. I was wondering if weight was the reason you don't see to many of this setup on a Scout.

As for pics, I myself haven't seen it yet, but when I do, I will be sure to post pics. Is it not normal to see this tranny with a pto setup? Maybe I will get lucky and end up with a better tranny for this setup. He said he was pretty sure it was a t90.

Anyone know a good donor vehicle for a front d44 that will be close to the width of my Scout? Disc brakes maybe? That would be cool. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Red,
the t90 is not going to be your week link imo. I have witnessed them taking a well built 350 driven hard on the street but wheeling is a different story. So Chad's wisdom is right on.

if the od is a warn styled unit (not likely as it only fits the t18 x-fer) the overdrive will only take the torque of the v8 if you are gental in the low gears. Since torque is what breaks gears and the low gears in the trans multiply the engines torque you will need to watch it or only use the od in high gear (3rd). The warn's rated @ 350 foot pounds (iirc). The 3-1(rough) first gear will load the od with 350 ftlb at 116ftlb at the engine.

The t18 or t18 xfer will do fine.

Sounds like a fun project.

The scoutii front 44 or a wagoneer front 44 are what you want. You can also narrow a Chevy 44 and run Scout inner axles. Do not run the 27. It will last for a short time but you will end up swapping it out. Do it right the first time:icon_smile:

First, let me say thank you again for your help. I have been on other IH forums and they are pretty intense about keeping IH with IH. I like that idea, but I have a decent Chevy block here and a really tired 152 IH. Not to mention the other drivetrain parts I have as well. My Scout is a project, probably will never be quite done, but that's the fun of it. I want to challenge myself and see what I can do next.

Rk, I haven't actually seen the transfer case or the rest of the parts for that matter yet, so I could very easily been wrong about what they are. I only know, at the moment, that there is a transmission, (3 spd, aa plate for sbc, long output shaft, pto), pto winch, and an overdrive unit. Unfortunately I am not sure of the make of any of it yet. I will try to call and find out for sure. He lives about 150 miles from me. Either way, thank you for your knowledge.

Rock tractor, also, thanks for you input. I have read lots of times that the d27 sucks big time. I will find one before I do the SOA. I am a pretty firm believer of doing it right the first time. Seems like I see them a lot on craigslist here but I will prolly try a junk yard as well.

Red,
I found and bought a Scout t18 4 speed that had been converted to take a GM bell housing and v 6/8. It has the short input shaft and 10 spline 1 1/8 diameter for the GM etc clutch.
No use for it now but maybe in the future. A bbc??? Time and projects apply.

Another question for you guys...

I have been pondering my SOA project and, taking the advice from you all, I decided to go and find a d44 front axle. I found one at a nearby pick and pull type place. It's off a 1979 Jeep wagoneer. I read in the bb that I would not have to do the cut and turn on this axle because the castor is already acceptable. Anyone know this for true or not?
