new engine, same ole blues

Tim,

I have been somewhat following the thread but haven't read all of it. It sounds to me like a bad head gasket(I have seen defective ones out of the box). Best to perform a leakdown test on the engine to narrow which which cylinder(s) are bad and then go from there.

Also, if in anyway you suspect its the aluminum intake feel free to send it back to Mike for a free pressure test. I have no reason to believe this May be your problem but thought I'd offer it up in case you were wondering.

Thanks Jeff for the offer but I really don't think it's the intake per se. I questioned the seal against the heads at first but when the problem was still there once I r&r'd it I was looking elsewhere. I've never had this problem with the intake before so I'm not sure it's the problem now.
Trouble is that I don't know how to eliminate anything as the culprit from where I am. It could be just simple head gaskets and probably is, but I'd really be hating life if I redid them with composites and the problem came back because of a crack someplace. :icon_rotate:

I agree here with Jeff tim...I've stayed out of that bb discussion as so much of it is bs!

Was the block/heads "decked" by per??? If so, ya May have some angle/alignment issues with the intake manifold (not the fault of the beer can unit)! Ya need details on exactly what/amount of machine work that was done. The bolt holes in the new intake May need to be elongated to allow for compound angle change, it's being held off the sealing members "slightly".

And...your cooling system pressure test shows coolant leak internally! Any crack in the heads/block will show up with uv test or magnaflux, no matter what the temp of the parts. Heads can be "pressure tested" with them removed by any decent machine shop.

Yes, per decked the block, I dont think they did anything to the heads except strip them down and rebuild them. They only had 2000 miles on them. They tell me they magnafluxed the block and heads.
They have since said I could send the manifold and they'd machine it for me. I May take them up on that
I bought a block tester today and checked the exhause gasses in the radiator. Looks like leaky head gasket, I bet right bank between 4 and 6. I could run a more specific test tonight by unpluging 2 4 & 6 and seeing if the liquid stays blue, then plug them back in one at a time to see when it turns yellow, that will narrow it down

Great diagnostics!!

I'd definitely have per angle cut that intake manifold, when ya torque in place, a tremendous strain is placed on the flange at the bolt locations as it tries to pull into position and...the intake gaskets can't compensate for the difference in mating angle.

Thanks Mike, that's high praise coming from you. This block tester is something new to me. But it sure tells the tale.
I'll send the intake to per for machining, I can only guess that they will know what to do to it. I still have complete faith in them and their work. I am choosing to believe that this little deal is an anomaly.

Just an update...
I changed the headgaskets to felpro composites and reinstalled everything. Talked to Mike at IH only about the intake and he told me that the 35 lbs I'd torqued the intake to was not enought to squish the gasket and that IH only now recommends 55 lbs.

Got it all together and no more intake leaks. As far as I can tell there are not head gasket leaks. Engine seems to be running fine except it's running a little Rich. Carb needs adjustment. Since it didn't run Rich before I'm guessing there was a small intake leake previously which leaned it out a bit.

Took the Scout out wheeling this last weekend and it performed great the entire time. I think the problem is solved.
