I have a 1977 Scout with a 304. I need ideas when rebuilding the engine what upgrades would be good to do. It has a 4 inch lift and 33x12.50 with a four speed transmission. It's goiing to be a weekend crusier any idea's will be greatly appreciated.

There is a tremendous amount of engine-build information contained in this sub-forum! Take the time to read through every thread and you will see a pattern emerge. The do's and the don'ts, the in's and out's.

if I had the money and wasn't smog restricted, I would get the rpt aluminum intake and a set of headers. Between the two, it would probably save around 400 lbs of weight. (maybe not that much, but working underhood alone it sure feels like it). Plus you get greater flow and efficiency. Bling :ihih:

rpt aluminum intake for 266/304 - squarebore - International Scout parts

stan's triy header for Scout II - International Scout parts

Use of the rpt manifold reduces total engine assembly weight by about 23lbs. That varies dependent upon which oem manifold is being replaced (there were several variations of both 2v and 4v designs), and how each of the manifolds are dressed out.

So the net weight change is...nothing.

If you compare the total weight of any header pair/set with a pair of oem iron exhaust manifolds, you will find the headers with collectors to be about 25lbs. Heavier than the oem setup.

Well when pulling the intake off under the hood to reseal the intake gaskets because you didn't read enough and didn't use coppercoat on the steel shims, an extra 20 lbs off would seem like a bonus. Not that I have ever done anything like that.....
