Narrowed 60s

76 IH Scout II

New member
I have a 76 Scout II and am looking to build it up of course. I have a set of narrowed Dana 60s just wondering what all you know about putting them under my Scout or if they will be to narrow. The 60s are narrow 4-6 inches on each side not sure on how much they are narrow as I got the from a friend with 4:88 gears for 300 dollars.

That seems like a lot, but you could always buy dually spacers or rims that have little to no backspacing to get the tires to stick out farther. You should measure the distance between the wms's (wheel mating surface) and report back.

If I had the other axles available I would do that but I don't have the other axles around they were gone out of the truck before I bought the truck out of the junk yard.

Still need help with this axles swap I would like to know soon otherwise I am going to have to find some different axles meaning I want to run 40 to 44 inch tires on it with about 400 hp the reason I am looking to run the 60s is cuz they already have like 4:88 or 5:13 gears and have chromally axles shafts in them and a locker in the front and rear thanks for all the help

You need to measure the axles you are planning on using as we have no idea what width they are, what width the perch's are, and the side that the pinion is on. How about post some pictures of the axles you are acquiring and the info we need and maybe then we can offer you some help. Without this info all I can do is shake my magic ball and see what the genie inside tells me.

The wms to wms measurement is abt 63" wide with a passanager side drop. The spring perches would/could be cut and moved to fit the Scout since they are set up right now for a custom 3-link. The 60's he is getting are coming from me.

So better question would be whats the wms to wms of a stock Scout II? I'll post a couple pics later

plans for the Scout wold be stay with leafs in the rear for simplicity, 3 or 4 link the front using coils from a 1/2 Ford or Bronco, 38-40" tires and a Chevy power train for cheap

scouts are ~60" in the front and ~58" in the rear.

So yes, the 63" wide d60's would work. But with a planned tire size of 40-44 your going to limit your turning radius. If that effects you, only you will be able to tell as I don't know what you want to do with this truck.

You can always add spacers or go with a shallower back-spacing rim to push it out. There is not magic number, as each persons truck and end result is different.

Personally I'm going "wide" then pulling it back in with high offset wheels. These keeps my scrub distance down and allows me some future tuning. But I'm also building for the rocks and trails, so I want as wide as possible while keeping it narrow enough for the trails I run. 80"+/- overall with 40" rubber. I'll be limited in my turning by the frame.

You can also widen your front by swapping your srw axle hubs for a set of drw hubs, there's plenty of people out there with drw hubs that'll swap with you, they probably even pay your shipping expenses. Just don't swap your rear srw hubs for drw hubs or else you'll narrow your rear even more.
