My first Diesel Scout Project-Revisited

The "mantra" of the pack rat “if you keep something long enough you’re bound to need it again”:icon_biggrin:

the caveat: “where in the hell did I put that??”:frown5:

my very first diesel Scout project was in dec of 1980. I had been the proud owner of a 1980 International diesel Scout II for about three months. Almost everyone I spoke to about it said it really needed a tachometer. Who was I to argue?

Back when al gore was working on which way to screw in a light bulb:out:. I phoned around and found a motorola 7st24013 0-4000rpm tach and I went about installing it. I ran it until around 1995 when the Scout raised the white flag at 350,000 miles. In the interim I had purchased a 1980 diesel traveler for my wife and the Scout II entered the “parts Scout” phase of its existence. The tach was one of the many parts I pulled with the engine with the idea of installing it in the traveler. Yes, good intentions!.........., say no more!:hand:

over the years I usually knew where the tach was located. The last time I remember the sensor it was in the dirt out side the garage. As far as the printed material was concerned 1981 was probably the last time I saw it.:icon_biggrin:

fast forward to present day:

whenever talking to my mechanic about the Scout he inevitably asks what rpm I was running when some event occurred. It was right at that time, in the same day I happen across the tach and the sensor with in minutes of each other, while looking for …………something else!!:d. I took it as a sign. Insert mantra here >

I looked on line for wiring information but came up empty handed. I did learn that prestolite bought out motorola instruments and changed the p/n to 7st24062s. Then there was also a reference to leece-neville sales no.104536a. I found about a half a dozen folks looking for wiring information. Prestolite has since discontinued its tach product line. I see this tach on ebay every once in a while but never with the sensor or instructions.

I woke up just yesterday and walked right over to where the instructions had been gathering dust. So I thought I would post up the instructions sheets in the hopes it would show up if someone else were to do an internet (thanks al!) search.:d

here are a couple of current pics. I used the shielded cable only because I had some. Everything is wired on the tach and inside the Scout, mounting bracket installed and firewall grommet drilled. I’m waiting for the mounting plate to come back with some powder coated parts. So it should return to service in short order after a mere 15yr hiatus.:d:eek::rolleyes:
