Mock up weight discussion

Re: GB's Rolling Chassis

Jeff,

I have a question regarding the chassis build-up and the reverse shackle kit install,

in most of the rs installs found under the build-up section, the install is done on a complete Scout or weight is added to simulate the full weight (like the adding of cylinder heads to the front). This is what helps locate the proper location for the rear shackle. How did you find the location for this build? I'm also starting with a bare frame and was curious how you determined the location.

I bought the kit several years ago at the nationals and am just now getting ready to use it.

Thanks,

We will install a mock-up engine and then stack as many cylinder heads as needed(I have a huge pile of them) to simulate a full bodied Scout in order to determine the shackle bushing position.

Thanks Jeff, that is just what I didn't want to hear. My stack of cylinder heads isn't that big. I was hoping there would be a way to cheat.

Bags of sand will also work, anything like that. The heads are just what we have laying around.

Edit: I moved these posts out of the build up thread into a more appropriate forum. This is good info for future reference

Chad,

thanks for moving the thread. I guess my question was specific to that project but muddled up the thread about the build.

How do you know how much weight to add to the Scout? I'd hate to add too much or not enough as that will affect the angle of the shackle.

I have a 1976 that I would like to mirror the 810 build. Except the 700r4 combo since it will be out of my price range. I have most everything else and am looking forward to starting the buildup.

One idea would be to see where Jeff drilled his rear hole, and where he welded the front mount. Assuming your using the same springs. Another idea would be to disassemble the spring pack down the main leaf and just use the main, as that will deflect with less weight. Your really looking for the travel of the spring shackle. You could also add back in some short tubing to get the spring thickness back up for mounting them to the axle. Plus you can figure out where you want the bump stops too. Hope this helped
