Mismatched drums? This can't be right.

I took the rear drums off my '79 s II yesterday. I was going to measure the I.d.s to see if they needed replacing or not. When I had them both off, I noticed that the two drums were different. This can't be right. I've never seen different drums on each end of a single axle before.
The manual makes no reference to a "right" and "left" drum. One of the drums is marked with a different max diameter than the other one. What gives here?

Thanks Jeff.
The one on the left seems to have a smaller inside diameter. Judging by the wear on the new shoes. The wear is at both ends of the shoe but not in the middle. As if the middle part of the shoe does not touch the drum at all.
Could that odd shoe be from an IH pickup? The wear surface seems wider than the other one? Heavy duty app perhaps?

Marty,

I could probably make you a match set if you want to come by and grab another "orginal" style. You May have to have it turned though. Give me a call if your interested.

Thanks Craig,

big-o wouldn't touch the worst one but they would turn the better one. The guy was able to clear out all of the groves but it came out twenty thousandths over the max diameter. I'm going to try it anyway. It can't be any worse than what I have on there already.
They only charged me $15. What a bargain, considering they charge $35 for a mount and balance!

Too bad they were in such poor shape. I would not be a bit surprised if that drum starts to warp being so thin... Might be okay under light load/breaking, but once it gets hot who knows. In any case I have that other set... You are welcome to them if it does not work out.
