Went down to leaburg today and partook in distributor 101.
swapped in my good delco after we shimmed it to get rid of the endplay, set the dwell at 72, and power timed it. Mike tuned up the carb as well which got it runnin almost twice as good. Well for a while anyway......
got to eugene and got some gas at the shell station and when I got it down to idle it sounded way retarded (the distributor, duh). Think farmall baby! Anyway, loosened the distributor and brought it back to where it was supposed to be and torqued it down good. Got back out on the highway and made it to jerry's and had to stop at the light. Putaputaputa... Die!
wouldn't start, so I got out and popped the hood and the distributor had migrated all the way retarded as possible. Grabbed the 1/2 and moved it back and tightened it down so I could get out of the honking traffic's way behind me!
pulled into the parking lot and set it again and really cranked it down. Pulled out onto the highway and instantly lost power and manged to barely make it off the highway. Spent half an hour trying to get the distributor to not move. I would tighten it down, start it up, rev it and watch the distributor slowly move over until it would die.
the jist of it is, that it bottomed the gear out against the housing causing friction, which caused it to turn. So I barely clamped it down and made it home. Noticed that I didn't have a gasket on the distributor, so once I get it on, it'll be up enough so that it won't rub. My exhaust also started leaking bad between the pipe and the manifold, for the 4th time! Talk about loud ride home. This is pretty much the same thing that happened the last time I got it running good when I put the new lifters in at john donnley's. All I can say is this Scout became a real pita recently. Will call up the exhaust shop that did the work and take it in to get him to fix the pipe, as it is not quite level/straight w/ the manifold and I know this is why it is leaking now. Enough of my ramblin, as it is hella nice to have a nice carb and distributor on the Scout now.
