location of winsheild wiper motor?

Can anyone tell me were the windsheild wiper motor is on a 79 Scout? I was driving home in the rain yesterday I heard a clank and my wipers stopped working. I can still hear the motor working though. I assume there is a clip that holds the wipers to the motor that came off. It is still raining since we have tropical storm hannah rolling through so I have not had a chance to look for it yet.

Welcome to the ihon forum krisk!!!

I've attached a .pdf scan of both wiper systems that were used on Scout II vehicles, one was sourced from autolite, the other from American bosch. Very similar but each has it's own particular wiper arm "drive" system.

You can access this by removing the radio from the dash. Once ya see how it's mounted ya can figgr out how to "fix" it!

Re: location of windshield wiper motor?

I was driving in the mountains this past weekend and noticed my wipers were making this clunking noise. I pulled the windshield cowling and to my surprise the steel bracket holding the motor had broken in two.

I will tig weld the mount back together tonight, but my question is the wiper motor seemed to be low on power, should I take the motor apart and clean it up? Not sure if there is just one ground that just need to be cleaned, or does it need complete tear down.

Found an old mm post for a place that rebuilds motors, but was hoping to get this back together quick. I do have a spare motor in unknown condition I could use too.

Most likely all that old goosegrease refined from reconstituted sperm whale squeezin's has congealed into a solid mass inside the gearbox! And the cold simply adds to it's hardness on the rockwell "c" scale!

Rip into it and give it a mega-douche, removing all the old crap. Then lube up real nice with modern stuff. If it's currently working (sounds like it is), then once ya get it back together with a fresh, modern lube job, it'll act like it's inhaled nitrous.

This is good practice for ya and simply adds to the skill set for when the big crash comes! Why not rip into the spare since it's unknown now, use that for a learning experience?

I've not done a sii motor/gearbox, but there are normally a set of contact points involved with a cam inside the wiper gearbox that operates the parking position for the whole shebang. Those have a habit of getting mungee over the years, just like in a distributor!

Re: location of windshield wiper motor?

Got the bracket welded up, that took all of 10 minutes. Then spent the next 2 hours getting everything installed. Not know what I know now added a lot to my time. But it's all back together and working. I just used some mobile 1 wheel bearing grease in there. I made sure all the grounds were clean and tight.

tip: Disassemble arms into 3 sections before installing. Install drivers wiper post and then the passenger post. Then connect the two arms together. Install the motor with arm attached and then make connection in center with passenger post.

Might seem obvious, but when it's your first time, I tried it a couple other ways:mad2:

Re: location of windshield wiper motor?

You now see how little I've used my wipers:( yes the Scout II has a wiper park. If they did not it would be a total pain to get the blades on right. No pic's as my camera batteries were dead, my camera has been flaky lately and sucks down a set of batteries asap. But santa took care of me and I got a new cannon power shot :icon_mrgreen:

I did open the motor and brushes looked good. I only pulled it apart about a 1/2" to take a peek.

Ok back to Christmas, I got an 18 pound bird to bbq on the rotisserie.my son is looking forward to leftover turkey for the next week
