Liftgate rusted bad, what should I do

I removed the liftgate glass on my 74 scoutii in prep for paint. Unfortunately after removing the rubber seal I found extensive rust damage. I could probably cut it out and weld in new steel but it would take a long time,.
Has anyone had experience with fiberglass liftgates? If so how do you attach struts and hinges? I would guess there are no threaded holes for said attachments.
Any advice is welcome.

I think the fiberglass replacment is a great idea. J@@p used them on there cherokee for ever. As for the hardware attach points I would think the mfg'r would be a good source for that info cause I don't know.
 
See if you can find a traveler top and liftgate, those are one piece and fiberglass. Study the hardware attaching scenario, should be a lotta pop rivets and backer plates!
