I got the lift gate handle and opener taken out of the Scout, I think that the opening mechanical part is broken, can someone look at the pictures and let me know if this is indeed broken.

Yes, that mechanism is near toast.

Those aren't worth scruuin' with when ya can still buy a new one that will work perfectly:

liftgate latch for 72'-80' Scout II - International Scout parts

I spent four hours yesterday on a near-same latch inna Travelall only because ya can't get a new replacement for the rotted stuff we find on these rigs.

Since you also have the latch tubes removed from each side, take the time to really clean those tube bearing points/rotors and lubricate. The "oval" shape end in each tube has most likely become distorted and real sloppy over time, since the entire latch and tee handle has no doubt been forced. Put the end of each tube in a vice and gently "squeeze" it back into shape, testing on the mating end of the latch unit. It should be snug, with only enough slop to allow the latch end to slide inside when reassembling. And put a dab of grease inside the tube ends before reassembling, as well as lubing up the new latch really well.

Don't know why I don't have pics of all this stuff here, guess I lost 'em at some point.

Michael,

what type of grease should I lube this up with, I have some good white lithium grease would that be good or is there a better flavor?

Thank you,

I like the white lithium in the spray can for doing this. Shake it up really well first though.
