Just sitting there!!!

I bought a '79 International Scout II about a year and a half ago and unfortunately due to funding limitations imposed by my better half it has merely sat in the garage patiently waiting. So since it sat before I bought it and has sat since I bought it, what are the things I need to do to preserve it during storage? I literally have done nothing but take the cowl panel off. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do not attempt to rotate the engine until you are ready to begin the process to make it run. This thread, along with a download of the "old iron" doc that is attached to that thread will explain why:

Make certain there is engine coolant internally which aids in preventing cooling system corrosion, but it's not nearly as effective if the engine is allowed to sit for long periods of time.

If it's in a garage, then it's already "dry", best to keep it that way.

Keep the battery in a "maintenance" state with periodic charges as shown by a voltage check.

If the fuel in the tank is reasonably fresh, then dope it with sta-bil marine formula (blue), the sta-bil "red" stuff is a fine product but does not offset/negate the negative issues created by today's e10 gasahol-blend fuel. But the fuel in the carb and fuel pump is most likely already rotten if the engine has not run in some time.
 
Well that's a place to start until I can get to it. I haven't tried to turn the engine at all and the Scout is in the garage. It doesn't have a battery right now, and the fuel I'm sure is garbage. It's going to be a good long while before I get a chance to start on the build so do I need to empty the gas tank of all the fuel?

If it were mine, I'd remove the tank and empty and dispose of the contents in an appropriate manner. You are under severe environmental restrictions sitting there over the edwards aquifer recharge zone!

If the stuff will still burn, I'd use it for dosing fire ant houses so I can hear 'em squeal while they are being warmed up.

I got lottsa ihbuddies in the hill country region, several in metro sanan! Very active club located down there...hill country binders.
