Is a D44 a D44?

The question is? I have a d44 that looks to be an sj wagoneer axle. The pumpkin is offset and it's a flanged axle unit with 4.27 gears. I also have a tapered axle d44 from a Scout 800 that has 4.88 gears. Are the carriers swappable with a side gear change? Or do I need to just change the gear set? The front d27 in the 63 is in awesome condition and has 4.88's and I like that gearing better than the 4.27's.

Any insight or knowledge on the subject?
