Installing a New Distributor Cap

Good Evening,
I'm installing a new distibutor cap and plug wires on a 72 Scout Ii with a 304.
I have the firing order and wiring diagraghm but I'm a little confused and not sure I've got the right cap.
In the pics attached the old cap is on the left and the new one is on the right. I've marked with tape where No. 1 is on each cap and it appears the new caps location is one socket off compared to the old one.
My confusion is do I have the wrong new cap or does it matter? Additionally the 2and pic shows ive lined up both side notch locations as a reference.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

the pictures do look weird, like the spacing is off on the new cap. is that what your seeing also ? you sure you have them numbered correctly? #8 and #1 arent mixed up between the two ?
i got an idea, install the new cap and see where #1 lines up compared to the old cap installed.

No. 1 is stamped on each cap and No. 8 is the first socket clockwise from #1.
The old cap when installed the #1 socket points toward the #1 cylinder where as the new cap #1 socket points one socket counterclockwise of the #1 cylinder as shown in the first pic.
 
as long as the sockets are spaced the same, it wont matter what the cap thinks is #1 all that matters is the plug wires being hooked up in correct firing order. so it sounds like the spacing is the same, as in the rotor points to a socket when it is supposed it. do the underside of the caps look the same, as in the rotor is not going to dig in or rub anything on the new cap as it spins.? i say put the new cap on, ignore the #1 marking on the new cap, and hook up the wires just like they were on the old cap and see if it starts up. use that other mark on the old cap, the one that looks like a circle with no number, if you use that as #1 the wires line up correctly. on both caps
remember on IH #8 is where you find top dead center and time off of #8 not #1 like a Chevy. maybe that is why that caps sockets are miss labeled for an IH maybe that cap assumes everything is chevy like.
