I give up (axle problem)

I am replacing the axles in my 800 with Scout II 44s. Am disassembling the front, and am down to the knuckle. O.k., how do I get the knuckle off? I removed the castelated nut on top of the top "ear" and the nut off the top of the bottom "ear." there is what looks like a threaded collar inside the bore of the top ear that seems to me I must remove. Is there a special spanner for this job? Can I just drive it with a screw-driver and hammer? I tried this, and I didn't budge it. I don't want to screw this up. How do I get that collar out and the knuckle off?

You need a bfh! Using a small sledge hammer hit the knuckle a few times where the balljoints are and then watch your toes.
