Hub halfway engaged question

I was using my Scout to "organize" my other projects out back the other day. I keep it in 4-low with the hubs out for this (and other) purposes, which I won't get into. Anyway, while turning under slight power I heard a dreaded pop. Stopped to investigate to find no noticable damage, but my hub was spun halfway between in and out. (I suspect my 3 year old, but I'm not upset about it in the least) so I spun it to the out position and continued. Put it in and out a few times over the last couple of days with no noticable problems. What could the noise have been from and is there possible hidden damage? What should I be looking for when I service these?

Thanks everyone! :cornut:

Pull it apart (its really easy and doesn't even require taking the tire/wheel off), clean it up and investigate.

Possibly nothing, possibly 1/2 the teeth sheered. They are kind of spring loaded, so if it was 1/2 engaged it could have possibly just "popped" under load with enough force to make noise, but no damage.

It will be pretty obvious if you did anything to them. Take this opportunity to clean all the old grease and grim out of them, lightly coat them (not pack) them with clean/new grease and reassemble. Might as well check the wheel bearings while your at it, but that's a little more involved.

If you ave questions, take some good pictures when you got them apart and post them up.
