Hello! Just talked to a fellow at IHOnly (probably the owner) and he was very helpfull and friendly. Bought this bascet case 1969 800a 8 years ago for 100 bucks. It's all there except for an engine and seats. Not looking to resore it to original, but I want a 4x4 for riding around on the endless trails here in hinton albeta.

Here"s the question....I need an engine and don't want to go with an original motor. I have the original t-18 trans with a Dana 20 single stick transfer case.

I want to use a Ford 351m or a 400m because I have one of each. Will the Ford engine with its bell housing bolt onto the original t-18 trany? Willl it work or will I need a different input shaft?? Please help!

I would recommend against a Ford transplant as the pan configuration causes issues.
GM v8/v6 is the way. Adapters are availible. If if Jeff doesn't I know Mike (IHOnly.com), jeffs bro has one that he would sell.

But since you have the Ford stuff might as well try that route

Just talked to a buddy tonight who has a Scout II with a "mint" drive train. Has a 304 IH engine. Could I just put my body on that chassis or will that not work??

P.s- what kind of power does a 304 make?

While I haven't done it, I'm almost positive it won't work. You'll have to transplant the engine, and from what I understand, this is difficult cross-model from sii to s800. Again, someone more experienced will have to fill you in.

P.s- what kind of power does a 304 make?

This is a long subject with a short answer: industrial. This engine was originally designed to see use in heavy trucks and stationary power output (correct me if I'm wrong?) so being underpowered isn't a problem... But these motors don't have tons of bolt on options for increasing output. In factory form, they all have relatively high rotating mass, and this plus an industrial head design leads to some limitations that not every chrysler/Ford/GM motor has to deal with. They are low compression, low-rpm beasts that were put into dump trucks at one time, buses at another.

An engine transplant will depend on one important thing, that being whether your rig already had a v8 or a slant 4; it wasn't specified in your 1st post. If it had an 8, all the better. I don't know about Ford blocks in a Scout, though a lot of guys have done Chevy 350's. For the needs you describe, I feel an IH engine would be your best bet as to compatibility and power. Personally, I think IH is a great engine for trail with good torque and low rpms all day if you like. Your rig, your call.
what kind of power does a 304 make?
Net hp at 4,000 rpm: 126 or 140 hp with dual exhaust.
Net torque at 2,400 rpm: 226 lb-ft

your torque band for an IH v8 runs around 1,800 to about 2,500. With a 4,200 lb chassis, you'll love the torque and say with 4.27 gearing you can go just about anywhere.
The Scout II chassis is longer, it takes some doing to put an 800 on it.
