Having the A/C worked on..Again!

Hey all,

about 6 years ago I had my '77 Scout restored and remember having some back/forth dialogue with michael mayben regarding some issues I was experiencing with the a/c. My a/c compressor would ice up shortly after turning it on and he was also skeptical as to if they did the r134 conversion properly.

Now, years later I am wanting a local shop to run through the a/c but for fear of not exactly knowing how to properly explain this stuff and knowing it was probably done incorrectly the first time (not by the same shop) I'm looking for a little assistance.

I have read back on some posts and have setup a parts list:

1). New tama tm15 compressor
2). CPT compressor retrofit bracket
3). A/c expansion valve w/flare
4). New dryer (unsure which brand/best/etc)

so a few questions are still floating about:

1). Is it worth me switching back to r12 and if so what needs to be changed back?
2). Does the type dryer I get depend on whether I run r134 or r12? What is the recommendation for either?
3). What type of charge fittings are the best to use? I have no idea what was installed by the shop. We had issues getting the old valves open.. Just confusion in general.
4). What other parts am I missing?

I'm running the factory thermostat and fan switches in the original ductwork with evaporator.

I'm not a mechanical person and in reading through some of the very technical posts I tend to get lost, and never really come from it with an idea of what really needs to get done other than what not to do. I suppose that is why I am not in this business..

So any help/feedback would be appreciated. I need to have a candid talk about what I need done.. And they need to be held to it but I need to be able to communicate with them what I expect.

Everything here (locally) that I have had done to the Scout has been wrong. Timing on #1 instead of 8, incorrect installation of rear main, etc. It doesn't end so I'm being overly cautious.

:icon_gonk::rolleyes5:

thanks,
brandon

I'm not fully up to speed with the a/c system. But with the way the tree hugging environmental nut cases go, I think r12 is being fazed out into non existence. But I could be wrong. There is r34 retro fit kits available somewhere. But then again, I'm not sure exactly what is involved, yet

R-12 prices on their way to the moon. They don't make it and haven't for a few years.

You May be better off and cheaper by buying a new unit from one of the venders who sell complete kits for a Scout and then you know exactly what you have.
