HAM Radio

I got the ham radio just in case of emergency's, but it works great for trail communications too. Nice clear communications.
The entire rubicon trail is covered.

I was able to hear n6icw repeater while on the slick rock trail and that was with the little rubber duck antenna on a handheld radio. Once I attached the 5/8 wave antenna is was a lot clearer.

Go to the link below and take the on-line tests. Just set it to wait for correct answer. Take the same test over and over until you pass. That will be like twice.:icon_wink:

One cool thing with my radio is I can auto patch / phone patch into the repeater and make a phone call when your cell ph has no service. Now realize everyone listening in on the repeater can hear you. :yikes: but when you need help who cares!
Frank yost offers access to 911 for free ( owner of the 805 repeater that covers all of the rubicon trail and then some.) I can hear people on the trail at my house near sacramento.

I'm a real nerd now that I listen to the communications from the space shuttle on the way to work.

if you had a good cb and antenna:icon_rolleyes:

X10 there. You really need both as some folks only have a cb.
Mike's cb is running more watts then a store bought version and that helps to push the signal out. Mike also had his cb radio "peaked and tuned" which helps in transmitting a signal. But more importantly it helps him receive a signal. Having the signal to noise ratio dialed in, means you can hear those weaker signals, which means more range. The difference between cb and ham running on 2 meters is basicly the same difference as am radio and fm radio. You just have clearer voice communication on fm.

I'm as guilty as the rest of the group with my cheap ass fire stick antenna. I will upgrage to a base loaded antenna like the wilson 1000. Here the link to radios Mike posted last year.

Heres the shop that did the tuning.

Came in handy tonight. I needed a 1" socket to fix my junk and mine was missing from the tool bag. I called out to some guys I met earlier and they brought me the tool I needed.
(thanks ki6ppu)

long story. My wife wanted to go 4 wheeling ( yes that's odd, but not the point) we headed up to wentworth springs and on toward ellis creek. Got up there fine, just 6-8" of snow. On the way back out the my power steering pump popped the can seal. I got everything out to fix it, but needed a 1" socket to get the can off the pump. I had talked to some guys at wentworth camp ground earlier and he gave me his call sign. So a quick call and they brought me the socket. I also had been talking to there buddy's in fresh pond when he was trying to reach ki6ppu and he had not answering. I talked with scott johnson ki6rtf he was looking for a snow report. I talked with barb n6boa she was heading toward stockton. That was all on the 805 repeater. I could also hear people on n6icw repeater, but their not much help when your on the trail.

I also put a good cb antenna on my Christmas list too.
