half the time it starts time, everytime

So I have been working on getting my Scout up and running, its a 76 304 gold box set up. It has a new fuel pump, accel coil, plugs and wires. Now the issue is about half the time it starts up like a champ and its ready to go after breif warm up, I can turn it off and start it back up as much as I want and its great. However the other half the times it will barely stay running and sounds like its randomly missing on 4 cylinders. Any thoughts?

Could be crap in the idle circuit.
If you think it is an ignition problem verify that the spark is healthy at the coil. Could be a traditional gold box failure mode but I would hate to just through parts at it.

I know on my 75 it was very tempermental when it came to starting. I had to follow very a specific procedure or it would flood. The carb was in good shape, rebuilt and clean and the choke was working fine. But if I hit the accel pedal once to much it would flood/spit and sputter.
Check your choke.
