Gopher Canyon, Ca trailride and break down.

I went to a local 4 wheeling place yesterday to take my Scout 4 wheeling for the first time in a very long time. It just rained quite a bit for southern California so the trail was very rutted out. Everything was going great and I was very happy with my baby, I just need to fine tune my carb.

I was very happy and crawling up the trail with a little bit of rubbing and I was at a part of the trail where I was pretty much flexed the whole way for my suspension (stock) and then....snap. My rag joint snapped. Great. Of course this is the only time I went anywhere without my tools. I went with a buddy who has a very nice Bronco and luckily he is a very good mechanic. We took out the old rag joint with two adjustable wrenches he had and spent about 3 hours trying to come up with something to put the steering back together. All of course in an area with no cellphone service :skep:

the I saw it, the two rubber things on each side of the grille that keep the hood from moving when latched. I took them off and they were the right size and long enough! We took those off and connected the steering and slowly reversed down the rutted out hill. My arm hurt to say the least because I don't have power steering. It sucked. But good experience!

I have never heard of a rag joint breaking. Has this happpened to anyone? Here are some pics.

You used the bump stops for your hood. Brilliant! Call Jeff to get your self a replacement borgeson joint and be done with that weak link.

They do break as I have seen them go on trail runs before, but only in a Scout II.

That is a brilliant fix, will have to keep that one locked in memory.

If you ever get a chance you should come on over to Scout meeting in san diego. We meet in el cajon. Would be great to meet you and head out on the trails.
