Gauge Conversion Wiring

This is the electrical side of the "gauge mod pod" thread posted in the fabrication forum.

After a through inspection of the stock wiring I found my terminal ends, wire, & bhc were all in good shape. Installed new sending units. The matching molex connectors were purchased from mcmaster-carr. The rest is layed out in the two attached pdf files.

The circuit numbers listed are correct for my 1980 scoutii ymmv.

Do you have a diagram for the speedo and maybe a tach? I am installing a new set of autometers myself and was just wondering. I saw at the bottom of the two pages you have posted that there are three pages total I thought there might be a first page with the above info. Thanks.

This is what I did. I used old gauges with new wiring. You want to use your original wiring with new gauges. This will at least give you the pin-outs for the speedo so you'll know what does what.

What did you do with the 3 blue wires that were bolted to the back of the volt gauge? Two of them are hot and all three run through the fire wall to a solenoid in the engine compartment.

I'm guessing you mean the "ammeter" right? If you aren't using one, then first disco the neg battery cable or you'll be welding before you know it. Use a bolt the same diameter as the ammeter posts (#8 maybe?) and nut all 3 wires together. Then tape (heat shrink is better) the crap out of it and cable tie it up out of the way so nothing rubs it. All of the truck's electricity (except the starter) went through the ammeter. The ammeter just gave a reading as to how much current was being consumed or re-charged by the alternator. If you don't tie those wires together, you won't have any power at the fuse panel.

Gotcha, thanks for the info and yes I did mean the ammeter. I am now using a volt meter and this is exactly what I needed.

On a side note I am using 2 wire indicators for turn, high beam etc. . . Instead of 3 wire ones. One wire will be a ground (all connected) and the other is the hot correct?

Got it figured out.

I have indicator lights for the new dash that have only 2 wires coming out of them. I am routing one wire off of each indicator light to a common ground and the other wire will connect to its proper oem pin in the molex connection to run it.

Cool! 2-wire indicator=light bulb. For consistency, make sure all of the grounds are from the same color wires or the outside of the bulb.that keeps the trouble shooting to a minimum.

Unfortunately both wires are black with no special markings, so I just picked one off of each bulb and used it we'll see how it goes.
