gasket problem with canister type filter

Having trouble with the oil filter on a 61 scout. The gasket that is to go in the groove on the top plate where the canister fits , will not fit. It is a wix filter #51156 . Any thoughts on how to get it in there, its just a little too thick to fit. Will soaking the gasket in solvent maybe shrink it a bit so it can be forced into the groove. This groove is barely big enough to fit the top of the canister itself.

The groove has the old gasket removed and is very clean with no build up. The new gasket that came with the wix filter has a date code of this year, but is very hard. It is also slightly larger than the groove the canister is to mate up against. I am starting to wonder since this is a early model 61 scout if it some how off a bit from later production, I sure have ran into many other one offs for this rig. I understand what your saying about not getting the new gasket to swell, thats just going to make it worse. I have a millwright friend that says some times you can soak a gasket in simple green, and it will soften the gasket with out swelling it. I think I will try this and then see if I can press fit it into the indent.

Finally got the gasket in the groove. Had to remove the whole mounting block, soak the new o ring in simple green for a hour then press fit it into the groove. Even though I wanted to stay with the canister style, I think after this dog and pony show ill go with the spin on style. The bolt and spring tensioner for the canister had been in a different order than the diagram I have for the filter. The way I have it now is first the long bolt, small washer, bolt goes into canister, spring sits around bolt on bottom of canister large end facing up, then filter with large hole facing up against small round gasket in the middle of the base plate, canister is then tightened with its edge pressed into the large 5 inch oring .
