Friends new scout

Hey guys,

a buddy of mine doesnt really have access to a computer so I wanted to do some research for him and see if I can get some suggestions.

He just recently purchased a 69 Scout here are the specs that I know about it. Maybe some of you can fill in the technical data for the items that would come stock for this year.

-v8 (think it might be a 304?)
-3 speed transmission
-transfercase (maybe a dana20 or 300)
-Chevy 3/4 Dana 44 front
-14 bolt rear
-sitting on bald 39.5 swampers

I am trying to help him out get it on the trail.

The axles only have 4.10's so I was thinking just a granny 4 speed transmission and throw a set of gears in the transfercase.

Here are some pictures of when the po was putting the axles under it, they are the only ones I could find.

Any suggestions?

Suggestions??

Put it together and drive it. Once you do that you can decide what you want to change.

How are you going to "throw a set of gears" in the transfer case? What does that mean?

First I don't know alot about scouts obviously, as I have a very built early Bronco.

I am just looking at helping outs friend with his rig and learn a little bit. So we are just looking for some suggestions of what 4 speed transmisson mate up to the stock motor. Not looking to spend money on adaptors.

Also for the transfercase we were looking at throwing a set of teralow gears in it. Any help identifying the tcase? It looks like a typical Dana 20.

Just looking for some helpful info to get us started. Maybe even point me into the right direction or a thread I can read on upgrades?

Thanks

Get a t19 wide box/IH input shaft. It's probably a Dana 20. It would only have a 300 if someone swaped it in, as they only came in one year ,1980. The Dana 20 has the speedo gear on the framerail side, and steel outputs. Dana 300 has the speedo gear twords the inside and aluminum outputs.

Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion, I will start to look into those. Any suggestion of trucks to look for the tranny in? Yeah and that's what I was thinking about the transfercase in it. We will probably put a tera low kit in it and rebuild.

Thanks,

kyle

oh yea, didn't think of that, I've heard of putting the 300 gears in the 20 but I thought he already had a 300.

You can actually get teralow gears for either the Dana 20 or 300 to get extra low transfer case gears. Thats what we will being looking to do with the existing Dana 20 that is in it.

Rock tractor and others should know some sources:

not sure of all the possibilities -- late 60's thru 70's t/a and pickups + Scout iis and travelers... Depending on which one you get ("older"), the granny low / first could be non-synchro...

Depending on the $$$ you want to spend, you could post a wanted ad...

Need to check the 3 speed bell housing to see if it is drilled and tapped for the 4 speed.

I do not know if there are any differences in the throwout bearing / arm... If you need to change bell housing, also...

Thanks, yeah I did some research and it looks like the one to get is the t19 out of a International from 1975-1980. Its has the granny low of 6.32:1... God that would be nice, my nv4500 is only 5.61:1.

I did a quick search and it looks like a 77 Scout is up at the chico pick and pull they said its a manual tranny but they wouldnt check to see if its still in it.

I really dont want to drive to chico from sac to check this out. Haha. Anyone in the area know if its still in there?

Thanks,

kyle

Needs to be a Scout transmission, not a full size.

While the t19 wide was offered in the full size pickups and travelalls, they all used a divorced transfercase, so the transmissions are all 2wd style with a u-joint at the back, rather than a tailshaft that can bolt up to a transfercase.
