• To ALL forum users - As of late I have been getting quite a few private messages with questions about build ups here on the forum, or tech questions about your personal project. While I appreciate the interest, sending me a private message about these topics distracts from, and undermines the purpose of having a forum here. During the day I wear many hats as a small business owner-operator and I work tirelessly to provide the absolute best service possible to you, our valued customer. When I created this forum I rounded up some of the best minds I knew so that any tech question you might have could be asked and answered by either myself or one of my highly experienced moderators, this way the next time this same question is asked the answer can be easily found and utilized by the next IH enthusiast having the same question. This allows me the freedom to run the day to day operations of the business and minimize the impact to shipments and shop activities that these distractions can cause. It is of the up most importance for me to complete the daily tasks in order to best take care of you our customer, all the while providing you a forum to get the level advice and input you have come to expect and deserve from the premier IH shop in the country.

So with that I ask that anyone with a question about one of our build ups or a general tech question to please use the forum as it was intended. I am absolutely available by telephone to answer your questions as well but at times may direct you back to our website to better field your question or questions. Most other private messages I will be glad to answer for you.

    Thank you for your understanding.

I got some spam this morning addressed to my handle here. This is the only place that handle has been used. Has there been a breech of the system?

A lot of websites have open ports that hackers can gain access.

[edit: removed port report]

Hi Jeff,

I guess I missed your reply. I received an email addressed to fdchappie and this is the only forum I've used that user id on.

Craig is correct that port 3306 should not be open, only the web server should be able to access the database. With the port open to the database hackers can get direct access to your/our data.

According to our webmaster port 21 is open because port 21 is ftp and is how files go between him and the server, and how other features of the server ‘run’ for moving files. Port 21 has nothing to do with someone spamming, or gaining access because public access is disabled and the forum has numerous other measures in place to track access to the server, and even automatically lock it down.

Also be careful where you post your e-mail or your phone number online. Posting such details to any forum including IHPA puts you at risk for automated “servers” to scan the internet, and “collect” your e-mail. This is a popular technique used by spammers to harvest e-mails. For example see this post made by Craig: http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/misc-sale/11147-IH-freezer-1948-1952-100-a.html Of what not to do. Instead of leaving your email address in public view it would be better to use “pm me for contact” or something similar or sellers should use a “throw away” e-mail, such as gmail or yahoo that’s easy to get a new one on when one becomes infested with spam.

I think Jeff is right, that hackers use web crawlers looking for info.

If his webguy says everything looks good, then its good!!

I believe he uses the same webmaster that has create the worlds largest off-road site pirate4x4.com

I would just Mark the e-mail as spam.

Its hard to say exactly where or how they got your e-mail address. But believe me it there job to find them.
