exhaust swap

Ok, need some input here. I have a 79 Scout , my donor rig, that has what appears to be a recently installed single exhaust system. Well it was done at least 14yrs ago , but it is still in good shape barring the rusted clamps and rotten hangers. My question is the motor still has the heat riser on the right manifold and the Scout im gonna put this on does not. Am I gonna have to have the flange modified to fit or do I need to gut the riser weld up the shaft holes and use it to get the proper alignment and seal. Yea I know I should just break down and buy new shit but hey money dont exactly grow next to the whiskey still down here, and like I said the stuff looks great even the mufflin device. It would sure beat the rigged up shit the p/o put under it. Any how yalls input would be great. Thanks brad

Yep sorry brad, unfortunatly the y-pipe will end up short on one side. You gotta good idear on guttin the valve and pluging the shaft holes though.

Iirc the valve has a flare type of bottom to it where the pipe mates to it and the manifold is flat. If you simply tried to use the tapered ring it would be a short stack.

Thanks for the input figured that would be the case. But hey cant stand to see good parts get junked. Soata feel like the ol indian in those old trash comercials from the 70s. It just aint right. I,ll gut the riser and use it as the spacer. Seen it done on sbc's more than a few times. Hell a few new clamps and some gimme hangers from a friends exhaust shop and I'll have a new to me exhaust.
Good part is I now have a project motor to tear down. 345 4 barrel with a thermo quad. Which by the way still works but I know its leaking. See micheal I do pay attention. Now just give up the name of the freaking epoxy so I can get it from my bodyshop supply house. I only want to do this once. And if I throw the Holley projection at it. I'll ship it to ya,so we can make some other junkiron gear head happy.

You probably need to replace the two gaskets that go with the heat riser.

There is the flat "aluminized" gasket that goes between the "top" of the heat riser and the exhaust manifold. I do not see one in the ihon store, so you need to call Jeff about one -- I asume he has them in stock...

There is the exhaust donut that goes between the "bottom" of the heat riser and the flared exhaust pipe -- two types in the ihon store.

The IH heat riser is flat on one side (towards the exhaust manifold) and has a slight indentation (1/16"?) on the other side to "hold" the exhaust donut in place.

Fyi one or both of the existing ones could be "welded" to the heat riser...

Thanks for the info guys. Gonna get on this lil project as soon as I get my tanks filled for the big red wrench. Heat seems to be the trick for bustin those stubborn bolts. Seems to just make em melt away.
