Hey guys, I am new to ihnorthonly and would appreciate any advice you could give me on my problem. I have a 1980 Scout II with a 345 v8. I have had it for a year.
It has had starting issues in the past. Everytime I started it in the past I have to hold the ignition down turning it over while I pump the gas for as much as 20 seconds before the engine will kick in. I had the starter rebuilt a year and a half ago and put on a new neutral switch and gas filter. The other day I drove into town and when I was about to leave, it wouldn't turn over. The battery is brand new and not dead (trying to jumpstart it changed nothing) the ground battery connecter I noticed was frayed so I replaced it but still nothing. I then manually used a screwdriver to rev the starter while having someone hold the ignition in and pump the gas and it still wasn't even trying to turn over. My best guess is that the solenoid on the starter has gone bad because it still won't try and turn over even when the starter motor is reving. Or could it be the ignition switch? Would you agree or disagree?
