Engine oil question:

My 79 Traveler has a 345 V8 with about 9,000 miles. When I broke it in, I used high zinc oil for the first 1000 miles, just to be sure things were working as planned. After, for the next 2-4000 miles, I used Valvoline 15-40 and 10-30 with a zinc additive. I've started using Shell Rotello 15-40 for the last few thousand miles due to its high zinc content and comments/suggestions made on this website and others. I was told recently that the Rotello oil is a very strong cleaning oil and that it may damage/harm the piston rings. Is this a valid statement and/or are there any other thoughts on using Shell Rotello oil? I am due for another oil change in a couple of weeks and would like some input.

Thanks all,

Richard

My opinion:

Rotella is a Diesel oil formulated for "compression ignition" engines.
The IH gasoline fueled engines are "spark" engines.

I suggest you use SWEPCO 306, 10W-30.

Of equal importance to Engine Oil, is which Oil Filter are you using?

hello all:
soooooo, I decided to give SWEPCO oil a try. Ordered and received 7 qts. of 15-40 306 plus Baldwin oil filter and changed my oil. I have a couple of observations and would appreciate some feedback. First: I did not know the oil is somewhat purple n color. No problem, just interesting. Second: when pouring the oil, it kinda flows a bit "thick", or thicker than what I am used to (regular 15-40 oil), and it has a somewhat "tacky" feel when feeling it between my thumb and finger. Regular oil feels smooth and slimy, the SWEPCO feels "tacky". Is it me, or just the way this brand is?

Thanks all.

That's how it is. Just pour it in and think less about it and enjoy your Scout. Your engine will survive.
