E-85 GAS

My mechanic claims that my Scout (fuel injected) is so old and primative that e-85 would work in this vehicle. What do you guys think?

Can you get it to start on e-85--probably.

Will it run--probably.

Is it a good idea--probably not.

Unless you have all of the fuel system upgraded to be ethanol friendly you will most likely find yourself dead at the side of the road. This will be due to one of the soft parts failing. Or some crud or corruption will come loose somewhere in the system and block your filters or FI system.

The normal pump gas that has up to 10% ethanol causes enough problems. Going up to 85% ethanol is just asking for problems.

I just posted an article about ethanol gas, it is listed under "today's posts" or the "oil tech" section of the forum.

Hope you find it interesting, I did.....

E-85 will work assuming your injectors have enough headroom to give the correct air/fuel ratio. You can't just dump in e85 without retuning your ecu, and you can't just switch between the fuels (without a bunch of extra work).

Marko is correct in that it will scour every bit of crud out of your fuel system and can attack some rubber/plastic parts. In the case of a low compression, normally aspirated engine like an sv, it doesn't make any sense to go to the trouble of switching over to me.
