dump the hubs

:yikes:hi all,

I was wondering if anyone would have any info on removing the front locking hubs. I mean still having 4wd but no lockers. I really don't need them over here in the flat land of nether... But I do like to have 4wd for winter with snow and ice.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like you mean all wheel drive? That's fine for a trail only rig or mostly off road at least. If you drive on road very much you will be wearing out parts needlessly. Probably worse gas mileage too.
 
Most definately will wear your front axle and front end,if you go full time 4wd,not a very good idea,severe bad gas mileage also,Jeff
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I do not want to change anything on the t- case and want to be able use 2 and 4 wd. It's just that I have some really nice wheels on my Ford explorer that I would like to use on my Scout. The explorer's bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5 and there is an adapter available that goes from 5 on 5.5 to 5 on 4.5. But the center hole of the explorer is only 70.8 mm so that won't fit over the lock-o-matic front hubs. That why I tought if there is a spindle replacement without the hubs and maybe even with the correct bolt pattern?

But sitting here and thinking about it, that would also mean changing the axle because it "sticks out" to far. So maybe based on this info you have different comments?

I was thinking... I sometimes see pics of scouts that seem to have smaller sized hubs at the front, like more the ones you see on cj's.

Would that be a way to use my explorer rims (with adapter)
 
Most of the time when ya see different hubs on these ole rigs, is when there has been lots of cashola thrown into the front axle for aftermarket upgrades. The f@rd exploders rims May look nice on a Scout, but you would end up spending more than you would expect, on axle parts, just for the bling bling look of the rims.
 
I hear you scooter, I'm trying to find out if it can be done without too much cost. Otherwise there are plenty of excellent rims available for the Scout and I have to give up the explorer wheels. It just that they are my first major import from the great us of a and they are unique in the netherland.

Understandable. Being unique is why I love these ole scouts so much. They aren't a Jeep or a Bronco, which every one mistakes these scouts for.

There are adapters out there that will allow you to bolt up a different bolt pattern to your current configuration. But would cause your new rims/tires to stick out past the fender wells. Which May end up rubbing the tires on the fenders when the tires get stuffed into place. I personally would stick with the stock bolt pattern of 5 on 5.5 pattern. Older fords (pre-96) had same bolt pattern.
