DUI install problem

First the vehicle identification, I have a 75 Scout with a 392, 727 and np 205 out of a 72 Travelall. The engine is stock and I have Dana 60s under it. I recently bought a dui distributor and the first thing I have to say is it seems to be a very high quality unit with very nice packaging and everything seems to be there for the install. However am on the part where you're supposed to check for play in the shaft with it seated in the engine, and I just cannot get the darn thing to sit in my engine. I can put the old distributor right back in so I've been comparing the two and noticed a few things. For one thing the old distributor is sort of beveled on the end whereas the dui is not so I thought maybe I could grind on it a little to get it to slide in easier. Also there is a roll pin on the bottom that is sticking out quite a bit.
If anyone has any tricks of tips for me, I would appreciate it greatly, I am not the most mechanically inclinded individual. I have included some pics of what I'm talking about as well as where it gets stuck. And yes I did the whole lead where it goes and I used a screwdriver to get the oil pump drive to line up, it didn't help.

I would grind or reset the roll pin for no protrusion. Aside from the bevel, are the oil pump tangs on both dizzies both the same length?
 
Not sure how you aligned the slot in the oil pump to line up with the flats on the bottom of the distributor shaft. Might just have to play around and turn the oil pump slot a little one way or the other a few times and then try re-stabbing. Looks like it's dropping in far enough for the gear to engage and start turning the rotor. Note where the rotor is pointing when it stops dropping in, pull the distributor back out, carefully rotate the rotor back to where it was pointing, and try and see how close the flats on the shaft line up with the slot in the oil pump. If the relationship between flats on the end of the distributor shafts to the gear positions (rotation wise) on the shafts aren't exactly the same for both distributors, then distributors won't drop in the same. To seat the pin better, you should be able to just clamp it in a vice. I wouldn't grind on that expensive a piece of hardware. Have one in my 75 Scout with a 258 and love it.
 
Am I right in assuming that if I have it correct it should basically kind of fall straight in? No forcing should be required right? And I was using a screwdriver driver to try to get the slot to line up with the shaft.. ..... hehe giggity..
 
Just wanted to let everyone know that I got it in, I just needed to wiggle it a little more. Looks awesome, haven't started it up yet, need to go get a spark plug gapper. What gap is everyone running theirs at?
 
I remember reading a post once, perhaps from mm against going the full 0.55? I think I May try 0.50 when I pop mine in but I'm still undecided.
