Distributor re-positioning

So I found out my distributor is 33 degrees advanced, it is a long story and I am sure the po can tell well, yet I cannot just move it to top dead center because it runs into the intake so I have to uninstall then reinstall. It is a 1510 sittin on a 345 in a Scout II. Is there a thread I can reference to guide me through the process? I have never dealt with removing a distributor and want to do it right. Also, is top dead still the recommended setting these days for a mainly stock 345?

Yes there is a dizzy thread, I thinking its in this sub forum, but its pretty straight forward. IH sv motors time on the #8 cylinder. Rotate your engine to tdc on the #8, pull the cap and see if its pointed at the right post. Then loosen the hold down and lift it out, reposition the rotor to point at the post, as you slide it down into the block rotate the rotor against the rotation of the dizzy one tooth, as it drops all the way home it should line up with the #8 post. Recheck points and set timing to around 10degrees btc. You can read the section on power timing and go from there. Hope this helps.

Goes like so when looking at the manual. You can just make out the number 1 in the pic which puts number 8 pointing to the radiator

Just a note, when you reposition your distributor the tang on the shaft is not likely to line up with the oil pump. This will prevent the distributor from going all the way into the block. Have a helper crank the engine, with the coil disconnected, until the distributor seats. This is the tricky part of the process.

An alternative is to make a tool to reach down into the block and turn the oil pump so that it aligns with tang on the dizzy.
