Distributor help

Hey guys, I have a really stupid question on distributors, my son has a '72 sii with a 345. It had a holly distributor with an electric trigger gold box, ran ok but the vacuum advance was not working. He went to napa auto parts and picked up a reman one. Turned out to be a prestolite with points, he did get the right cap and rotor with it.I didn't even check what he got when he got it, now its time to replace it and it doesn't hook up like the old one. Here's my question, what do we need to do to get it to work? Thanks in advance.

If im correct it hook up basically the same you have a wire from the pos side of the coil and a wire from the neg side. Look back in the distributor threads on here and you should find all the info you need.

thanks towpainter3, I did go through the posts on here before posting my question. I found some info in a service manuel I borrowed from my father in-law. I think I can remove the gold box and wire in straight to the coil, according to some generic diagrams on the two different systems. Hopefully, that will get it running. I know it's kind of a step down but I think we'll end up swapping out the points for a pertronix upgrade.

Yes you can wire it direct with no gold box. And no its really a step forward, not really up but forward the gold box is pesky and will leave you stranded in some wrong turn type of place you dont want to be.. At least with points you can keep a set in the glove box and replace as needed. The pertronix upgrade is a great idea and you might even run into a prestolite electronic dizzy. They are simple and reliable. Im running the presto electronic with a msd box and coil. As mayben said the ultimate IH ignition set up.

Again thanks for the info, the Scout is my sons. I already funded the motor & tranny work, so I'm leaving the "little stuff" to him. Good to hear it's a step forward not down, just waiting for a cooling tube and back in the motor and tranny go:icon_twisted:.
