Hello, I keep seeing on several different IH parts sites that have Oil dipsticks for the 304, with the tube on the backside of the motor, and not on the timing cover.

What exactly is the difference between the 2 styles.

I'm trying to locate an IH original dipstick for a 304 that has the tube on the timing cover, however Nobody has one.

Oil dipstick on front of engine is for all IH except Scout II.

Oil dipstick on left side of engine is for Scout II.

Oil dipstick length depends on the oil pan installed, which is determined by the chassis the engine is installed in.

Parts Manual for your vehicle will provide the correct part number.

The vehicle is a 68 1200C 4x4 longbed, I have the dipstick on the passenger side timing cover. Mine is broken off and I'm not sure exactly where it's broken off at on the stick.

I inherited the vehicle without any documentation, except title and some good stories.

It is a later 68, as it's titled a 69

Best to buy one that is longer than you require, Change the oil and fill it with the required amount of oil and a new filter. Run it, shut it off and allow to drain back to the pan for 20 minutes. Mark that level on the new stick as full.
