bay area group to meet at the diner in fremont, travel in convoy to museum. 680 n to 84 e to livermore, 580 e to vasco rd n to ca4 to brentwood then oakley, 160 n to 12 n at rio vista to museum. About 1hour and a quarter.
Sacramento group to meet at the towe automobile museum [has new name], travel in convoy down the river roads to rio vista and north to museum on 12. About an hour and a half of scenic driving through the delta.
Good ice cream shop in walnut grove on the way back.
Meet for lunch [11] At foster’s big horn in rio vista
welcome to foster’s bighorn, a restaurant and bar where the sportsman is in his element, surrounded by world class trophies. A classic and historic place to stop for an excellent meal, cold beer, and a glimpse into the world of big game hunting in the 1930’s. With a private collection of over 250 specimens from africa and north america, foster’s is a showplace with a 65 ft. Bar, eight cold beers on draft and two dining rooms. Families are welcome. A bistro-type menu features bison, beef, ribs and fish along with seasonal favorites.
After lunch we continue on to the museum. Admission is $10.

Take a 10-mile electrically powered train trip through the peaceful, picturesque montezuma hills over the original historic main line of the sacramento northern railway. As a living history museum, the western railway museum gives visitors the opportunity to ride authentic historic streetcars and interurban electric trains from all over California and the western united states.

your trip to the western railway museum begins in the mission-revival inspired visitor center. After buying your admission tickets, explore cameron hall, a 2400 sq. Ft. Display and exhibit hall designed in the grand railroad station style. Cameron hall contains many exhibits of historic interest including a permanent exhibit on the transportation history of solano county. There are also several other exhibits that change periodically. Adjacent to cameron hall is the large museum store and the f.m. Smith memorial library and association archives.
Museum facilities are ada-accessible with some exceptions. Many of the railcars and rolling stock have narrow passageways or steps that cannot be altered due to their historic nature. In such cases, every effort has been made to provide interpretive material that is accessible.
Museum grounds
the grounds of the western railway museum include a large car house with historic electric-powered rail vehicles you can stroll through. The 1.5 acre shaded picnic grounds are perfect for family and group outings.
Electric operations
volunteers operate authentic, restored trains every day we are open. Follow the paved walkway from the visitor center to the boarding platforms at the north end of car house one. Your admission ticket to the museum is good all day, and you can ride as often as you wish.
Presently the museum offers 15-minute, mile long streetcar rides around the grounds, and a 50-minute interurban ride over the re-electrified portion of the former sn interurban mainline to gum grove.
