Hi guys, I have a 1970 Scout 800 modified with a Scout 2 Dana 44axle with a 4.56 gear. Dana 44 up front and rear, locker in the front, spool in the rear.
I do mostly city driving, I want to head to a buddy cabin which consist of 300 miles of expressway driving then its 3 miles of crazy off roading.
My question to everybody is which one would be the best replacement for that spool? Will I be able to drive in the city and expressway comfortable but still be able to trail it ?
Also am I looking at a big expense?

Leave the spool -- you'll be fine - you will wear tires out a little faster but you will always know what it is going to do.

I 2nd leaving the spool. I've run them in my last 3 'trail rigs' 2 of which served dd duties as well. As stated above other than tires wearing faster there are no surprises.

My current spooled rig is my '87 Jeep comanche...122" wheelbase...it's a booger in parking lots being that long but easy enough to drive everywhere every day if I chose to do so.

I would agree with the other two. You will drag the inside tire a little bit cornering but it shouldn't effect too much otherwise. I have had one in the rear on two different vehicles that see some road driving with no concerns.
