Dana 44 Axle Shaft Crack ?

Is this a stress fracture or ? It is in a perfect line around the shaft.

It’s very unlikely a crack would propagate from a smooth surface. 99% occur at a stress riser or corner. Magnetic particle inspection is the only true test for iron/steel.
